These types of lights contribute artistically to their cities, generate power for the grid, and reduce dependence on costly nonrenewable energy.

Pengembangan Teknologi Nano

Teknologi nano atau nanotechnology sekarang makin pesat perkembangannya. Nanometer sendiri artinya satu per satu miliar meter, sehingga teknologi ini juga berkaitan dengan penciptaan benda-benda kecil. Di dalamnya tergabung ilmu fisika, teknik, biologi molekuler, serta kimia.


ALBERT Einstein sendiri, sebagai bagian disertasi doktornya, mengalkulasi ukuran sebuah molekul gula dari data eksperimen. Hasilnya tiap molekul berukuran sekitar satu nanometer. Hampir seratus tahun kemudian, nanometer pun telah menjadi agenda banyak peneliti.

Tapi, sebenarnya tidak semua teknologi nano tadi benar-benar nano. Ada yang aslinya menangani struktur ukuran mikron atau satu per satu juta meter, seperseribu, dan yang lebih besar daripada nano lainnya. Teknologi nano pada kebanyakan kasus juga bukan benar-benar teknologi. Tapi, lebih berupa penelitian dasar terhadap aneka struktur dengan dimensi satu sampai ratusan nanometer.

Kerancuan lainnya, sejumlah teknologi nano sudah ada sejak dulu. Contohnya partikel karbon hitam ukuran nano sudah dimanfaatkan sebagai pelekat tambahan ban mobil sejak seratus tahun silam. Vaksin yang kerap terdiri dari satu atau banyak protein berdimensi skala nano juga bisa dimasukkan dalam teknologi tersebut.

Alam telah banyak menciptakan struktur nano. Tapi, definisinya yang lebih ketat mungkin seperti yang disampaikan Mihail C Rocco dari National Science Foundation (NSF) di Amerika Serikat. Menurut Mihail dalam situs Sciam.com, teknologi nano memiliki sejumlah unsur penting; dimensinya antara satu sampai 100 nanometer, didesain melalui proses pengontrolan bahan kimia dan fisika, serta bisa digabungkan membentuk struktur lebih besar.

Dan, teknologi yang sesuai definisi tadi benar-benar ada. Misalnya penggabungan beberapa lapis nonmagnetik, tiap lapis tebalnya kurang dari satu nanometer, dapat menghasilkan sensor untuk disk drive yang lebih sensitif. Sejak diperkenalkan 1975, produk magnetik ini sudah menjadi pendorong tumbuhnya industri penyimpanan data.

Semakin kecilnya ukuran cip elektronik juga menjadi faktor yang menumbuhkan minat dalam teknologi nano. Perusahaan komputer yang mempunyai laboratorium besar, misalnya IBM dan Hewlett-Packard, memasukkan program nano dalam kegiatannya. Saat peralatan elektronik silikon konvensional tidak dipakai lagi, mungkin sepuluh atau 25 tahun mendatang, bisa dipastikan peralatan elektronik teknologi nano akan menggantikannya.

Di luar biologi dan elektronik, partikel nano dipakai untuk meningkatkan mutu produk keseharian. Misalnya perusahaan bernama Nanophase Technologies telah membuat partikel zinc oxide untuk produk tabir matahari (sunscreen), sehingga krim yang biasanya berwarna putih berubah transparan.

Teknologi impian

Pihak pemerintah AS sendiri memiliki agenda tersendiri untuk teknologi nano. Mereka ingin menciptakan bahan ukuran nano yang bisa mengurangi ukuran, berat, dan kebutuhan sumber listrik dari pesawat luar angkasa, membuat proses manufaktur ramah lingkungan, serta membentuk dasar bagi pestisida biodegradable.

Tiap penelitian mempunyai risikonya sendiri. Tapi, teknologi nano memiliki masalahnya sendiri. Keinginan mewujudkannya sebagai kaidah ilmu yang terhormat kerap tercampur dengan asosiasi para futuris yang melihat nano sebagai jalan ke techno-utopia, misalnya dunia industri tanpa polusi, kemakmuran tanpa batas, bahkan keinginan mencapai kehidupan abadi.

Tahun 1986 misalnya muncul buku Engines of Creation karya K Eric Drexler yang cukup populer. Buku ini menggambarkan sejumlah mesin nano yang secara virtual mampu memproduksi segala jenis barang, lalu melenyapkan masalah pemanasan global, menyembuhkan penyakit, serta memperpanjang usia hidup secara dramatis.

Bagi kalangan nonilmuwan, angan-angan Drexler terhadap teknologi nano dipandang sebagai jembatan penghubung dunia ilmiah dan fiksi. Ilmuwan yang selalu ingin mencari solusi pasti juga tertarik terhadap pembicaraan mengenai produk penunda ketuaan ataupun mesin penumbuh makanan.

Secara tidak langsung, karya Drexler mungkin juga bisa benar-benar menarik orang terjun ke dunia ilmiah. Sebagai subgenre buku fiksi ilmiah, karya-karya teknologi Drexler layaknya film Star Trek yang mendorong minat para remaja akan luar angkasa sehingga nantinya berkarier dalam astrofisika atau aeronautika.

Di antara para ahli kimia dan ilmuwan yang sekarang menjadi ahli teknologi nano, prediksi Drexler memiliki daya tarik tersendiri. Soalnya sampai sekarang belum dapat diciptakan mesin-mesin nanoskopik yang misalnya mampu menolong membangkitkan kembali otak yang sudah dibekukan.

Zyvex, sebuah perusahaan yang tertarik dengan teknologi nano ala Drexlerian, sudah mengalami betapa sulitnya menciptakan robot berukuran nanometer. Jadi, perusahaan tersebut sekarang lebih puas menangani elemen mikromekanis yang lebih besar.

Di luar masalah tadi, dunia teknologi nano masih bergelut untuk menyatukan pandangan. Beberapa riset akan tetap berjalan apa pun namanya. IBM misalnya akan tetap membangun produk magnetoresistive tanpa memperhitungkan apakah penelitiannya disebut teknologi nano atau bukan.

Misalnya konsep nano ini bisa disatukan, teknologinya dapat menjadi dasar untuk terjadinya revolusi industri terbaru. Supaya sukses, teknologinya tidak hanya perlu membuang mimpi tentang robot nano pembangkit mayat tapi juga menghilangkan retorika yang berlebihan. Lebih penting lagi, ilmu nano dasar harus bergerak mengidentifikasikan jenis teknologi nano yang patut diwujudkan.

JAKARTA, SENIN - Cadangan minyak dan gas bumi semakin menipis. Saat bersamaan, harga bahan bakar minyak terus melonjak. Mengatasi kesulitan itu, Departemen Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral akan mengembangkan energi baru, yakni coal bed methane atau gas metana batu bara.

"Era minyak sudah surut, sekarang kita ganti dengan batu bara dan gas. Batu bara dan gas menjadi energi primadona dan paling murah yang berlimpah di negara kita. Saat ini kita mulai eksplorasi gas alam, coal bed methane," ujar Menteri Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM) Purnomo Yusgiantoro.

CBM, kata Purnomo, sumbernya melimpah di Sumatera Selatan, Sumatera Tengah, Kalimantan Selatan, dan Kalimantan Selatan. "Cadangan CBM secara nasional mencapai 453 triliun standar kaki kubik atau trillion
standard cubic feet (TSCF)," ujarnya.

Berdasarkan data Bank Dunia, konsentrasi potensi terbesar terletak di Kalimantan dan Sumatera. Di Kalimantan Timur, antara lain tersebar di Kabupaten Berau dengan kandungan sekitar 8,4 TSCF, Pasir/Asem (3 TSCF), Tarakan (17,5 TSCF), dan Kutai (80,4 TSCF). Kabupaten Barito, Kalimantan Tengah (101,6 TSCF). Sementara itu di Sumatera Tengah (52,5 TSCF), Sumatera Selatan (183 TSCF), dan Bengkulu 3,6 TSCF, sisanya terletak di Jatibarang, Jawa Barat (0,8 TSCF) dan Sulawesi (2 TSCF).

Di tempat serupa, Sekretaris Direktorat Jenderal Minyak dan Gas Bumi Departemen ESDM Teguh Pamuji menerangkan, kontrak untuk eksplorasi CBM telah ditandatangi antara PT Emdco Energy dengan PT Ephindo untuk lahan di Blok Sekayu di Kabupaten Musi Banyu Asin (Muba), Sumatera Selatan. "Diharapkan tiga tahun ke depan, atau tahun 2011, CBM sudah dapat dipasarkan," ujar Teguh.

Sebelumnya, PT Petro Muba, Sekayu, Musi banyuasin (Muba), dan PT Epjhindo sepakat bekerja sama mengeksplorasi CBM. Kemudian PT Elnusa Drilling Service, anak perusahaan PT Elnusa, memenangi tender pengerjaan tiga sumur uji coal bed methane (CBM) di lapangan Rambutan SSE Blok Sumatera Selatan. Elnusa
dinyatakan menang dalam pelelangan yang diadakan PPPTMGB Lemigas. PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) akan
mengembangkan Coal Bed Methane (CBM) untuk menggantikan gas bumi.

Bentuk CBM sama halnya dengan gas alam lainnya. Dapat dimanfaatkan rumah tangga, industri kecil, hingga industri besar. CBM biasanya didapati pada tambang batu bara non-tradisional, yang posisinya di bawah tanah, di antara rekahan-rekahan batu bara. Agar lebih mengunutngkan, CBM lazimnya dieksplorasi setelah batu baranya habis ditambang.

Sejauh ini, biaya eksplorasi CBM masih lebih tinggi dibandingkan mengekplorasi minyak bumi. Namun, kata teguh, pada satu waktu nanti, biaya akan lebih murah sehingga CBM menjadi energi alternatif baru yang dapat dimanfaatkan masyarakat.

Saat ini, ada 20 perusahaan antre mendapatkan izin eksplorasi CBM, di antaranya perusahaan swasta pemilik kuasa pertambangan batu bara. Pengembangan teknologi untuk mengekstrak sumber energi ini pertama kali dilakukan di Amerika Serikat, yakni Alabama dan Colorado Selatan pada akhir tahun 1980. Di Amerika, gas alam jenis CBM mencapai 7 persen dari total produksi. Negara lain yang sudah mengembangkan CBM antara lain Afrika Selatan, Australia, dan Kanada. Sementara itu dalam sebuah blog seperti disinyalir dalam konferensi para journalis di Universitas Harvard, terungkap enam pilar kunci yang membedakan blogging dengan saluran komunikasi lain yang menjadikan blog memiliki kekuatan tersendiri di satu sisi. Kekuatan-kekuatan itu diantaranya :
1.Publishable, pengguna dapat langsung memposting berita. Mudah, murah dan dapat dibaca dimanapun.
2.Findable, mudah ditemukan lewat situs pencari, berdasarkan subyek, nama penulis atau keduanya. Makin tambun suatu blog, makin digemari.
3.Social, yaitu blogsphere cirinya adalah cuap-cuap. Percakapan yang menarik berdasarkan topik beralih dari suatu situs web, ngelink dari suatu link ke link yang lain. Melalui blog mereka yang memiliki minat yang sama dapat membangun network atau berita lintas geografi.
4.Viral, yaitu informasi menyebar lebih cepat melalui blog dibanding news service. Saat ini tidak ada viral marketing yang dapat menyetarakan kecepatan dan efisiensi suatu blog.
5.Syndicatable, yaitu content yang kaya mudah disindikasi oleh siapa saja. Bayangkan dunia penuh dengan orang pandai, dan lewat media blog, ribuan informasi, bisa didapat.
6.Linkable,yaitu setiap blog nge-link ke yang lain, memiliki akses kepuluhan juta orang yang mengunjungi blogsphere setiap hari yang bercirikan komunikasi internet dua arah.
Media blog itu bagaikan supermarket tabloid.

Hari-hari yang melelahkan

Memasuki bulan Agustus ini banyak acara yang digelar oleh bangsa kita dalam memperingati hari kemerdekaan.Padahal kita baru saja melepaskan lelah setelah menggelar acara pileg dan pilpres. Lepas dari masalah pro maupun kontra hasil dari hajatan tersebut, kita mau ga mau harus mengakui kalau kedua acara tersebut sungguh sangat melelahkan baik yang terlibat secara langsung ataupun yang tidak langsung.
Dan sekarang mulai dari tingkat RT sampai ketingkatan tertinggi dari institusi di negeri kita sibuk menghadapi acara HUT Kemerdekaan.
